Horse Barn Builders in Central Oregon: What to Look For Before You Sign

When choosing horse barn builders in Central Oregon, look for one who can explain layout, ventilation and exactly what is included, not just shell pricing.
Ask about layout and use
Stalls, tack room, wash area, aisle flow and trailer access all shape the design. Extension guidance gives a starting point:
- Aisles of at least 10 feet, wider (12 to 14 feet) if equipment will pass through
- Stall walls at least 8 to 9 feet high, and ceilings of at least 9 feet, with 10 to 12 feet recommended where there is a ceiling
- Higher clear height if you plan to ride or longe inside
Ask about ventilation
Good air movement protects horse health. Penn State Extension recommends the equivalent of at least 1 square foot of opening into each stall, even in cold weather, and notes that a barn with a good aisle can still have poor air inside the stalls. Ask how the builder plans eave and ridge openings, stall openings and, if needed, fans. Insulation also helps limit condensation.
Ask about materials
Steel resists rot and does not burn, though hay and bedding do. Ask about fire planning, such as clear aisles and separate hay storage.
Ask about scope, permits and the builder
- Get a written scope showing what is included.
- In Oregon, a qualifying farm or equine building can be exempt from the structural building permit under ORS 455.315, but land use and electrical, plumbing and mechanical work still need approval. Check with your county.
- Confirm the builder's Oregon contractor license, bond and insurance.
